Meeting with Mehbooba lands 'Dangal' girl in soup

Kashmiri girl Zaira Wasim, who played wrestler Geeta Phogat in the Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Dangal’, on Monday apologised for her “recent” actions.

Zaira, who called on Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday, took to Facebook on Monday afternoon to post an “apology and confession” where she asked the people not to follow her footsteps and that she doesn’t deserve to be a role model.

Zaira apparently felt offended by comments made by trolls on Facebook and Twitter after she met Mehbooba. “This is an open confession/apology. I know that many people have been offended and are displeased by my recent actions or by the people I have recently met. I want to apologise to all those people who I’ve unintentionally hurt and I want them to know that I understand their sentiments behind it, especially considering that what had happened over the past six months (sic),” she posted on Facebook.

“But I hope people can also understand there are certain circumstances that emerge which one cannot control and I hope people still remember that I’m just a 16-year-old girl and I hope you treat me accordingly. I’m sorry for what I did but it was not a deliberate decision and I really hope people can forgive me (sic),” she added.

There was no clarity on whether she received any threat from militants which could have forced Zaira to post the ‘apology’.

However, just a few hours later the teenager, who last week qualified her board exams for Class X, deleted the post and said she was upset that it had “been turned into national news”.

In her latest post she urged the media and others not to blow the issue out of proportion. “I have not been forced into anything by anyone,” she said.
On Sunday, Mehbooba met Zaira and, as per an official statement, appreciated her family and spoke to them.
