South African cricketer Tabraiz Shamsi, who is a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), always looks forward to the IPL because he gets to come to India and mingle with the people here.

He feels that the IPL format of cricket has brought together legions of cricket fans and taken the craze to another level altogether. Tabraiz, who is in the city to endorse evoSPEED 1.5 Cricket Spike from Puma, talks to Nina C George about fashion, cricket and more.

What is your definition of style?

I believe in wearing clothes that I am comfortable in. Because when you do that, you naturally exude confidence. I believe in dressing up for myself.

How do you stay fit?

Staying fit is a big part of being a cricketer. You have to make a lot of sacrifices. There are a lot of times when cricketers tease each other for not being able to indulge in their favourite dessert or dish but that’s the price we have to pay to stay fit.

What is the best part about the IPL?

The fans, I believe, are what has sustained the IPL. And the hospitality and warmth of the people here is amazing.

What do you do when you are not playing cricket?

I am studying marketing, so away from cricket, I concentrate on my studies. Besides that, I like to relax and spend some quality time with my friends.

We hear that you have learnt magic...

As a teenager, I learnt a few magic tricks. I seriously considered becoming a magician till cricket took over and changed my destiny forever.

Were your parents supportive of your decision to become a cricketer?

I was always given the freedom to decide what I wanted to do. Choosing cricket was a tough decision. I had to work very hard to get to where I am now. It wasn’t an easy journey but indeed a beautiful one.

How has cricket changed over the years?

As children, we enjoyed playing cricket. But when it’s a profession, the passion, dedication and commitment remain. However, we seem to have forgotten to enjoy the sport.

How is it to be back in Bengaluru?

I am excited to be back and play in front of the cricket fans here. I had come to Bengaluru four years ago, but only for 10 days for a camp. I love the city for its colourful life and vibrant culture.
