Veda Krishnamurthy and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, the two State girls who played a crucial role in India’s sensational run to the final of the recent ICC Women’s World Cup, were on Wednesday felicitated by the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

Although both cricketers are employed with the Indian Railways, KSCA recognised their achievements by presenting each player a cheque of Rs 5 lakh, a silver memento, shawl and Mysore peta.

“I’m really proud to be a part of KSCA,” said a delighted Veda, who has been in the spotlight ever since the team’s return to country. “I’ve been playing for Railways for sometime now but I always call KSCA my second home. Since my teenage years, KSCA has supported me a lot.

“Even now, although I’m employed by Railways, KSCA has chosen to felicitate me. It feels very gratifying. At the start, we were called daughters of the state. To be called such nice things makes one feel really blessed. I’m thankful to the KSCA for kind gesture.”

Rajeshwari, who hails from Bijapur, said KSCA never hesitated to offer her any facilities. “I’m from Bijapur and facilities are quite limited there. I had to come to Bangalore often to train. Whenever I came to the KSCA, they gave me a ‘nets’ to train. They take good care of cricketers from other centres.”
