Families can adopt up to 4 children: HC

The Dharwad bench of the High Court of Karnataka has said that a family can adopt up to four children if it has the financial means to support them.

C Verghese and his wife Alia had submitted an application seeking to adopt a girl child, which was found abandoned in Bailhongal of Belagavi district, in April 2014. He had filed an application in the district court in Belagavi, seeking permission to adopt the child, as required under law.

The district court dismissed the application stating that the couple had already adopted a girl child in 2009 and there was no provision for adopting one more child. Verghese had moved the high court. Justice Sreenivas Harish Kumar, who heard the matter, said that there was no restriction that a family should adopt only one child. If the financial condition of the family is good, it can adopt up to four children, it said. The court permitted Verghese to adopt the girl child. Counsel Sangram Kulkarni appeared for Verghese.
