Man crushed to death between buses

The dead man is Nagaraj Naik (26), a resident of Kumbara street in Ulsoor. He was working as an attender at St Joseph’s College of Business Administration on Residency Road. Syed Imtiyaz Rizwi (54), a resident of Banashankari and a BSNL employee was was admitted to St Philomena Hospital for treatment of injuries.

The incident led to traffic jam for nearly half an hour. Despite a major road accident and a dead body lying on the road, vehicle users tried scramble their way through. Continuous honking and trying to jump the traffic signal led to a chaotic situation. The traffic police had a tough time in ensuring smooth traffic flow.

Around 9.45 am, a BMTC bus was awaiting the green signal at Ashirwadam Circle. Nagesh came out of the college campus on his moped and stopped behind the bus. A scooterist, Rizwi, was slightly behind Nagesh, while a car was behind Rizwi.

Another BMTC bus plying between Majestic-Marathalli sped up from behind. The bus driver, Subbarayappa, lost control when he neared the Circle and rammed into the car and the  scooter. The car and the scooter were thrown to the right side of the road. Rizwi fell and sustained injuries. The speeding bus then hit Nagaraj from behind. Nagaraj was crushed between the two buses with his moped. The intensity of the accident was such that he was killed on the spot due to multiple injuries, while his moped was mangled. The car, scooter and the parked BMTC bus were also damaged.

Subbarayappa jumped out of the bus and surrendered at the Ashoknagar police station. Rash and negligent driving by Subbarayappa caused the accident, said the police.

Both the two-wheeler riders were wearing helmets when the accident took place. Rizwi got his hand fractured. He was on his way to office, while Nagaraj was returning to the college after collecting breakfast for the staff. A native of Davangere, Nagaraj had joined St Joseph’s College five years ago. He leaves behind his wife who is carrying their second child, and their two-year-old son.
