Bhaskar Moily voted Mangaluru mayor, Mohammed Kunjatabail his deputy

As expected, senior Congress member Bhaskar Moily was elected mayor and Mohammed Kunjatabail as deputy mayor in the mayoral elections held in Mangaluru Mahanagara Palike, in Mangaluru on Thursday.

Returning officer Shivayogi Kalasada announced this result.  

Earlier, Muslim Congress leaders had demanded that the mayoral office be reserved for Muslims.  

In the meeting chaired by Dakshina Kannada District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai on Thursday morning, the candidates for mayor and deputy mayor were finalised.

Bhaskar Moily of the Congress and Surendra Shetty of the BJP filed their nominations for mayor's post.  

Bhaskar Moily bagged 37 votes and Surendra Shetty got 19 votes.

Similarly for the deputy mayor post, Congress candidate Mohammed Kunjatabail bagged 37 votes and BJP's Meera Karkera got 19 votes.    

Congress has 35 members in the Palike. MLA J R Lobo and; MLC and Chief Whip in the Legislative Council Ivan D'Souza voted for the Congress candidates.
