Addressing reporters here on Thursday, BU Vice-Chancellor N Prabhu Dev said at the 45th annual convocation, 143 students have been shortlisted for gold medals in various subjects. The Vice-Chancellor said the cost of gold medal per student would be approximately Rs 17,000 and the amount in the corpus fund would not be sufficient to meet the expenses.

“Instead of the gold medals, cash certificates will be given to students,” Prabhu Dev said, adding that the University was spending Rs 34 lakh on gold medals.

The VC said the University will not confer honorary doctorate on any member. Sources said in the previous BU Syndicate meeting, a set of names for honorary doctorates was recommended and the names were sent to the Governor’s office for approval.

But the recommendation of those names drew criticism from different quarters and hence the Governor decided not to confer honorary doctorates.

Online Degree Certificates

BU will host the degree certificates on its website maintained by MeritTrac, a commissioned agency.

The degree certificates of all eligible graduates as approved by the bodies, will be hosted on the web on a downloadable format soon after the convocation. Students who have applied for convocation can obtain a copy of the same using a personalised access code.

Students who have not applied for the certificates may also use the facility by making online payment.

Formal degree certificates will be issued through colleges shortly.

45th annual convocation

As many as 24,774 candidates will be awarded degree certificates at the 45th annual BU Convocation to be held on Friday. About 143 candidates will receive gold medals and 180 Ph D Degree holders will be awarded doctorates. Governor and Chancellor Hansraj Bhardwaj will preside over the convocation while Indian Institute of Science Director Prof P Balaram will deliver the convocation address, at the Jnanajyothi Auditorium, Central College Campus, BU.
