'Unattractive' wife strangled to death

Twenty-year-old Muddamma was married for three months

 According to police, Muddamma of Toganavalli was found strangulated in her Bhairameshwar Nagar residence around 8 pm. She was married to 22-year-old Govindaraju, a garment worker from Madhugiri in Tumkur district, three months ago. Govindaraju was unhappy with the arranged alliance to Muddamma, an “unattractive rural girl.” His family, however, forced him to marriage, police said.

Govindaraju allegedly strangulated Muddamma in the morning when a spat broke out between the couple. He later locked the house and returned home in the evening. He asked the key from the house owner Shivanna saying he had lost the one with him.  The incident came to light when Shivanna gave the key and Govindaraju opened the door. Govindaraju feigned ignorance when Shivanna questioned about dead Muddamma. Smelling something fishy, Shivanna informed the police who arrested Govindaraju.

According to police, Govindaraju has confessed that to the murder as he didn't like her and she didn't know how to cook. Rajagopal Nagar police registered a case.

Escapes from custody

A man,  who was arrested following his wife’s complaint of dowry harassment and subsequently stabbed himself gave a slip to the police while being brought to the Cottonpet police station on Wednesday.

According to police, Suresh was arrested after his wife lodged a complaint accusing him of dowry harassment. Acting on the complaint, the police brought him to the station. Suresh, however, stabbed himself at the station and was subsequently admitted to the Victoria Hospital.  The police were escorting Suresh from the hospital when made good his escape.

In a complaint to Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Suresh has accused the police of torturing and stabbing him. The police, however, have denied the charge.

Victims identified

The three persons killed in the road accident in Peenya on Wednesday night have been identified as K B Girish (25) of Pavagad, Tumkur district, Nataraj (35) of T Dasarahalli, and Gouramma (45) of Mallasandra, all garment workers.

According to police, Raghu, Bhumika, Siddaliangaiah, and three others were injured in the mishap which threw traffic out of gear.

Narasimhaiah, driver of the offending vehicle, has been arrested. The victims were travelling in a maxi cab bound for Tumkur and rammed into a lorry carrying metal sheets from Peenya Industrial Area. As a result, the metal sheets pierced into the cab instantly killing the three.

Post mortem was conducted at the M S Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital. Peenya police have booked a case.

Bike lifters held

Police arrested two persons and recovered six stolen motorcycles worth Rs 2.5 lakh from them on Wednesday. According to Wilson Garden police, Shaikh Shahbaz alias Sabu (19) and Tanveer Pasha (20) of New Gurappana Palya, were arrested when they made away with a two-wheeler last Monday. 

A teenager who had allegedly snatched the cellphone and bag from a girl in Kasturinagar has been arrested by the police. Sunil (19) of Yeshwanthpur, with the help of his friend, had robbed the girl and fled in a car which has been recovered, police said. Ramamurthy Nagar police have registered a case.
