CM, vigilance panel meet

First meeting since Yeddyurappa assumed office

He said the administration would not tolerate delay in registering cases or tampering of records to favour the accused. 

He was addressing the reporters after a meeting with the State-level vigilance committee set up under the scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Though the law stipulates that the committee meet once in six months the Chief Minister had not held the meeting even once during the 28 months of his rule. This is the first meeting he held after assuming office as Chief Minister. National SC/ST Commission Chairman Buta Singh, during his recent visit to Bangalore, had criticised the Government for not convening the meeting.

The Chief Minister said of the 5,182 cases registered under the Act in the last four years 1,949 had been resolved and hearing of 484 cases are at various levels. The Government has set up special courts to handle such cases in Bijapur, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Tumkur, Mysore, Kolar and Raichur and more courts will be set up if found necessary, he said.

Yeddyurappa said the Government has allocated nearly Rs 5,000 crore under different heads for the welfare of the SC/ST people.
