President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appointed Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka of the Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court

The appointment was notified by the Centre through a notification dated April 30, 2019. The notification states that Justice Oka would assume the office of the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court from the date he assumes charge.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Oka to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in its Resolution dated April 8.

Following his enrolment in 1983, Justice Oka practised in the Thane District Court in the chambers of his father, Shreeniwas W Oka. In 1985-86, he joined the chambers of VP Tipnis, a former Judge of the Bombay High Court and former Lokayukta. He has appeared in several important matters and public interest litigations. He was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in August 2003. He was made a permanent judge in November 2005.
