Meet on IT in modern warfare from tomorrow

A two-day sixth national conference on ‘Information Technology in Defence 2010,’ beginning on Thursday in the City, will look into these and a few other issues bogging down the country’s defence forces.

The conference — to be organised by the Computer Society of India (CSI) in association with the Defence Development and Research Organisation (DRDO) — will focus on emerging technologies in the modern battlefield.

C R Chakravarthy, Event Chair, said technology had dramatically reduced the time to react while communicating across the three armed forces — the army, the navy and the air force.
Gathering, processing and analysing data, taking decisions and exchanging them with the ground-level forces have been reduced to real time,” he said.

The challenge, Chakravarthy says, is to integrate and assimilate data across various systems to help decision-makers act quickly. The scenario on internal security has also changed with the growing trends of proxy wars, terrorism and cyber wars.

In addition to senior scientists from various defence laboratories across the country, vendors from the Ministry of Defence, the private sector and the military will take part in the crucial discussions.

The conference will look into technology enablers that can reduce time to react on the battlefield; new technologies for raising network-centric operations to higher levels;

effective use of mobile phones in warfare; special ways to secure communication in this respect and technologies that can help meet these needs.
