Movement of light vehicles sought on Shiradi Ghat

Last Updated 27 August 2018, 18:08 IST

The residents of Shiradi and surrounding villages staged a protest at Gundya, demanding to allow light vehicles on the stretch.

The protesters said that the work on clearing the National Highway-75 should be accelerated and the blanket ban on movement of vehicles should be removed.

Under the aegis of Malnadu Hitharakshana Samithi, “Shiradi Ghat Rastheya Satya Darshana” padayatra was organised on Monday. As the district administration had clamped prohibitory order in the area, the padayatra was dropped and a symbolic protest was staged.

To ensure that no padayatra was conducted from Gundya, the police had placed barricades.

The protesters held a meeting in Gundya and demanded to repair the road within a week and allow the movement of light vehicles.

MLC Tejaswini said, “We are not against development. Even Sampaje Ghat connecting Madikeri too is closed. The density of vehicles has increased on Charmadi Ghat. Deputy Commissioner should find a solution to the problem at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, Puttur Association of Civil Engineers President Shankar Bhat said that a team of engineers has inspected the road and a report will soon be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
