Elections to 2,200 panchayats in Assam will be conducted in two phases— on December 5 and December 9 in 26 districts and 14 civil sub-divisions.

The counting will take place on December 12.

Announcing the dates in Guwahati on Monday afternoon, HN Bora, state election commissioner, said that a total of 1,40,000 civil employees and one lakh security personnel will be deployed for peaceful conduct of the polls.

A total of 1,56,41,456 voters will cast their franchise out of which 8,12,38,35 are male and 7,51,76,21 are female voters.

A total of 23,505 polling stations will be set up out of which 8,243 polling stations have been marked as ‘sensitive’ and 3,665 as ‘very sensitive’.

November 15 is the last day of filing nomination papers. The ruling BJP and its ally AGP has already decided to contest the panchayat polls without any seat sharing. Congress too will contest without any alliance.
