Coronavirus: No flight shall operate to Kolkata from six cities including Delhi, Mumbai from July 6 to 19

The Kolkata Airport announced on Saturday that no passenger flights will operate to Kolkata from Delhi,Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chennai and Ahmedabad from July 6 to July 19 upon request from the West Bengal government.

“It is informed that no flights shall operate to Kolkata from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chennai & Ahmedabad from 6th to 19th July 2020 or till further order whichever is earlier. Inconvenience caused is regretted,” tweeted Kolkata Airport.

The Kolkata Airport also stated that the decision has been taken to “restrict movement” from cities with high number of Covid-19 cases so that the spread of the virus can be contained.

“The temporary restriction on arriving flights to Kolkata Airport from 6 cities viz Delhi, Mumbai,Pune,Chennai, Nagpur & Ahmedabad is on the request of State Govt. to restrict movement from high prevalence cities of coronavirus cases in order to contain the spread of COVID19,” tweeted Kolkata Airport.

The development comes days after chief minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Centre to suspend domestic flights to Kolkata from places with high prevalence of Covid-19 cases. She also said that the government will write to Centre in this regard.

Domestic flights resumed in the country on May 25 following a gap of two months due to the nationwide lockdown. Scheduled international flights are still suspended in view of the pandemic.
