Students from IIT Kharagpur of West Bengal have developed two unique solutions for the detection of fake currency and nuclear radiation. The solutions were developed in the Smart India Hackathon 2019, a national level competition.

According to a statement issued by IIT Kharagpur, a team of six students from the Computer Science and Engineering Department have developed an image processing mobile application through which one can detect fake currency notes just by uploading its photograph.

“A user can upload a currency note image and the mobile app would verify its authenticity using 25 features extracted from the front and rear side of the currency note.

“In case of detection of a fake note, the user will also be notified of the failure checkpoints,” the team leader TYSS Santosh said in the statement issued by IIT Kharagpur.

Another team of students has developed a solution for detecting nuclear radiation. The students were asked by officials from the Department of Atomic Energy to provide a solution for professional hazard faced by people working with nuclear-powered devices.

“The students were asked to develop a solution for visualising and localising a 3D radiation source along with its size, shape and orientation, given the data on spatial dosage,” stated the IIT Kharagpur release.
