Goa rape accused eludes police

“We have been looking for him since, but he is absconding,” SP Deshpande said. The High Court of Bombay at Goa had revoked Fernandes’s anticipatory bail on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Russian officials said they were “astonished” with the way the Goa police  handled investigations into the rape complaint.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday, Russian consul-general Alexander Mantytsky said though the victim had provided all the facts of the case, the police delayed matters to such an extent that “all possibility to gather evidence has been destroyed.” 

The accused was not sent for a medical examination and his car and clothes were taken into custody days after the incident.
The case kicked up a row after the chief minister told a TV channel that the woman should have been more careful about staying out late night with strangers.
Goa Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik’s controversial remarks in the case also raised a ruckus in Parliament on Tuesday.

Responding to the chief minister’s comments, the Russian envoy said that if the Goa government felt it was not safe for tourists to be out late at night it needed to make it clear to visitors so an appropriate advisory could be issued to its nationals. He hoped action would be take to improve the security of tourists in Goa.
