Prof beaten up for not allowing copying in exam in UP

A senior faculty member of a private university in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut town, was brutally assaulted on Wednesday in full public view allegedly by some students for not allowing them to resort to unfair means during the examinations.

The teacher was intercepted by some students near Lalkurti area in the town, while he was on the way home on his motorbike. The students, who carried sticks and lathis in their hands hit him repeatedly inflicting serious injuries on him, the police said.

Police sources said that the professor was saved by some passers-by, who intervened and forced the attackers to beat a hasty retreat. Some attackers had put on masks on their faces in a bid to hide their identity, they said.

Sources said that the teacher, a faculty at the Subharti University, was rushed to the hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.

Police officials said in Meerut that three students were arrested in connection with the attack. Efforts were on to nab four others, who were also involved in the assault.

Sources said that the teacher had not allowed some students to resort to cheating during examinations a few days back as a result of which they were angry with him. The students had an altercation with the teacher after the examinations also.

Complaints of copying were quite common at examinations in UP schools and universities, especially in the western region. Earlier also teachers have been attacked for preventing the students to resort to unfair means during the examinations.
