Nearly 13K in state given govt jobs in 2 years; unemployment at 5.37 lakh: Guj govt

The Vijay Rupani government in Gujarat has provided employment to 12,869 individuals across the state in last two years.

This information was shared in the ongoing Legislative Assembly session during Question Hour. Other than government jobs, the state government claimed that seven lakh individuals had got jobs in these two years, primarily in private sector. Accordingly, the figure of total number of unemployed, including educated and semi-educated, in the state stood at just 5,37,562.

Rupani had in October 2016 announced that the state government had identified over 67,000 government jobs in the state and that they would issue notification for recruitment to all the posts by March 31, 2017.

According to  the Statistical Outline of Gujarat, 2016, published by the state government, 23,806 factories had closed down in the state between 2014-16, rendering over 12.57 lakh people unemployed, besides nearly 7 lakh educated unemployed youth registered with the State Employment Bureau, taking the number of unemployed in the state to an estimated 19.57 lakh.

Of the 12,689 government jobs created in last two years, the youth in Narmada district got highest share of 2,576 jobs, while commercial capital of the state – Ahmedabad – bagged 411   government jobs and state capital Gandhinagar recruited 1,460 to jobs.

In contrast, districts as Navsari in South Gujarat, Panchmahals in North Gujarat and Kheda in Central Gujarat, nobody received a government job in the last two years.
