In all, 150 bags of solid waste were collected from the drive, which began from the Gangadhareshwara temple premises.

More than 200 school students, nursing students and members of volunatary organisations armed with bags involved in collecting the solid waste that were strewn across the hill.

The students and members were grouped into fifteen teams, which began anti-plastic drive at tribal hamlets Yarakanagadde, Hosapodu, Muthugadagadde and surrounding areas and gathered the strewn plastic bottles, plastic covers and other waste and later cleaned the Gangadhareshwara temple premises also.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Amaranarayana disclosed that around 12 tonnes of waste has been collected and the drive would be taken up at Himavad Gopalswamy hills too. He appealed to the people and devotees to make the Bilgiriranganatha festival, which is being celebrated on April 18, a plastic-free.

He also advised the tribals atop B R Hills to stop buying and minimising the use of plastic articles, that would pollute the environment and also keep their premises clean by removing parthenium in their surroundings. Another round of drive would be held for the students after the summer vacation, he stated.

He later distributed a cheque of Rs 13,000 to purchase two bicycles to the students as he had promised during a programme organised by Ride A Cycle Foundation, where free cycles were distributed to students.

Tahsildar Hanumantharayappa, Temple Executive Officer S Linganna and others were present.
