Mysore varsity VC fails to appear before panel

Mysore University vice chancellor K S Rangappa and Karnataka State Open University former vice chancellor M G Krishnan failed to depose before the Privilege Committee of the Legislative Council even on Wednesday.

The committee, which was preparing to issue an arrest warrant against the two, has however, decided to give them one more chance to appear before it.

Both Rangappa and Krishnan failed to appear before the committee on Wednesday despite being served a final notice to do so. Committee chairman Go Madhusudhan had said arrest warrants would be issued if the two officials failed to show up.

However, as Rangappa has furnished a medical certificate stating that he is unable to travel as he has fractured his kneecap, the committee has instead decided to hold its next meeting in Mysuru itself on May 11.

“Rangappa has claimed he has undergone a surgery and submitted a medical certificate. Instead of investigating the certificate, the committee has decided to accept it. As he is claiming that he is unable to walk, the committee has decided to hold its next meeting on the KSOU premises, which is about 1.5 km from both his personal and official residence,” added Madhusudhan.

When asked why no action was taken against Krishnan, Madhusudhan said one last chance was being given to the former vice chancellor as well. According to the committee, the duo have committed breach of privilege of the state legislature by not taking the approval of the Assembly and the Council for the different statutes constituted by the two universities.
