Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), which is making all efforts to minimise generation of waste, is set to relaunch ‘Green Wedding’. The concept is not new for Mysuru as the MCC had introduced it before Covid-19 itself. The first Green Wedding in Mysuru took place in November 2019.

An engineer of MCC had performed his son’s marriage and then Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar and MCC Commissioner Shilpa Nag had issued a certificate to this effect.

Shilpa Nag said, “Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri suggested promoting Green Wedding in order to avoid use of plastic and also to avoid generating bulk waste, in a recent meeting.”

“A decade ago, there was no ‘use and throw’ concept. We used to carry tiffin boxes for lunch. But, today everything is used and thrown. Thus, we thought of educating the people. Mysuru is ready to take the next leap and accept behavioural changes. Thus, Green Marriage was introduced. Basically, bride and bridegroom take a vow to be together for a lifetime and they can actually implement a lot of good things about environment,” she said.

Nag said, “Only 38 kg of waste was generated in a wedding where 4,000 people attended. We have proven it scientifically. In addition, the MCC will collect the leftover food and hand it over to orphanages and other organisations.”

The MCC also promotes reuse of water in choultries by using organic detergent. The water used to clean utensils was used for gardening. The MCC will convene a meeting with choultry owners in this regard, the commissioner said.

In order to guide marriage parties on conducting ‘Green Wedding’, a cell would be launched and environmental engineers will guide wedding parties on arranging green marriages.

“The engineers will monitor the couple and family. We have certain criteria to certify the wedding as ‘Green Wedding’, she said.
