Two taken into custody in Tumakuru gang rape case

The police have taken two men into custody in connection with Tuesday’s gang rape incident.

The district police have formed seven teams, led by Madhugiri DySP Lavanya and Tumakuru DySP Chidanandaswamy, to nab the suspects.

State Women’s Commission chairperson Manjula Manasa on Thursday visited the district hospital and obtained details from the rape victim.

Several women’s organisations, joined by labour bodies, staged a protest in the city on Thursday, condemning the incident. They urged the police to act tough against the rapists.

According to a statement given by the victim to the police, the suspects picked her up at Town Hall Circle on the pretext of dropping her home. But they drove the Tata Suma to an isolated place near Dobbspet and gang-raped her.

The suspects then pushed the victim, who was in semi-conscious state, out of the vehicle near Halenijagal. Passersby got her admitted to a hospital in Dobbspet.

The incident came to light after she was shifted to the district hospital.
The victim, a native of Magadi taluk, was married to a man from Koratagere. After the death of her husband, she had shifted to Laggere in Bengaluru and was ekeing out a living by working at a garment factory in Dasarahalli, the police said.
