Apple may bring 'ProMotion' OLED display to all iPhone 17 models

In 2024, Apple reduced the differences between the regular iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models compared to the previous year's iPhone 15 series. Both variants came with a dedicated camera control button and supports Apple Intelligence features.

However, the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which costs over Rs 60,000, features a low-end LCD panel with 60Hz refresh rate. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature high-quality Pro Motion OLED panels with a dynamic 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate.

Now, a report has emerged that Apple will end the display disparity in the iPhone 17 series next year.

MacRumors, citing a Chinese tipster who goes by the name moniker Digital Chat Station (DCS) on Weibo (it is an X equivalent platform in China and is not available to view in India), has reported that Apple will use an OLED display with Pro Motion technology on all four iPhone 17 variants. They will also support a 120Hz refresh rate.

For uninitiated, the phone's refresh rate is the number of times per second that its display updates its image. It is measured in terms of Hertz (Hz) and the higher the number, the better the display.

With a higher refresh rate, the screen responds faster and feels more fluid. And, it will also significantly reduce motion blur and improve image quality. This will enable the phone to deliver a good viewing experience while watching movies or playing games.

People are discontented with the use of LCD screens with just a 60Hz refresh rate for such an expensive iPhone. Several Android Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that sell phones for as low as Rs 20,000 offer displays with support up to 120Hz refresh rate.

Digital Chat Station has a pretty good track record. He has sources inside Apple's supply partners in China. Last year, DCS correctly predicted the iPhone 15's camera sensor details.

In 2025, Apple will bring Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO)--based Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) panels to standard iPhone models.

That's not all. Apple is expected to replace the iPhone Plus model with a new ultra-thin variant.

We are not sure if it will be called an iPhone Slim or iPhone Air, like the MacBook series. It is said to come with 8mm thickness and due to the design limitation, the device will feature special slim camera sensors, and may not come with SIM slot. So that, there is plenty of space for a big battery to ensure the phone runs all day.

2025 is seen as a super cycle year for Apple, as the company is expected to see spike in demand for iPhones.

Going by recent reports, the Cupertino-based company is leaving no stone unturned to make the new iPhone 17 more appealing to customers.
