Leaders of the I.N.D.I.A. opposition bloc would meet in New Delhi on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning to assess the Lok Sabha poll results, sources have said.
They said top leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.) have been asked to be in Delhi by Tuesday evening, once the counting of votes in their respective states is over.
The sources said this was decided by the opposition leaders when they met at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence here on Saturday afternoon.
"I.N.D.I.A. leaders will obviously meet after the results are declared," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X while denying reports that opposition parties will hold protests if the poll results go against them. - PTI

In a bid to prevent post-poll violence, the Election Commission (EC) has for the first time decided to continue with the deployment of central forces in some states even after the expiry of the Model Code of Conduct period, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said on Monday.
He said while the EC believes that there would be no post-poll violence, to prevent any flare-up, the election body has, for the first time, decided to deploy central forces even after the provisions of the model code are lifted following Tuesday's counting of the votes cast in the Lok Sabha polls.
The states where the central forces would continue to be deployed include Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur, Kumar said. "Wherever we think there is a possibility (of violence)," he told a press conference here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set for a landslide victory in India’s general election. Or so claims nearly every exit poll released since the end of voting on Saturday evening. Yet, these surveys have proved spectacularly wrong in the past, and they must be read even more cautiously this time around because of the Modi government’s outsize sway on the television stations that commission them.
Mind you, the actual count on Tuesday may well give enough seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance for it to stake a claim for a third straight five-year term. But 350-plus NDA lawmakers in a 543-member parliament, as predicted by nearly every exit poll, sounds like an unrealistically large mandate.

Incumbent Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who is accused of rape and serial sex abuse, has lost against Congress’ Shreyas Patel.
Prajwal has lost by 40,000 votes against Patel, which has helped Congress win the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency after 25 years. Patel had lost against Prajwal’s father HD Revanna from Holenarsipur in the Assembly polls last year.
Sex videos linked to Prajwal were widely circulated in Hassan just days ahead of polling on April 26. This might have contributed to Prajwal’s defeat. Also, a section of BJP leaders are said to have worked against Prajwal, which helped Patel win. (DHNS)

"BJP and NDA's seat share is lower-than-expected. There is only one state that has gone completely off the charts in our data: Uttar Pradesh. And that has pulled down the BJP's own tally as well and this is the reason they are unable to touch the majority mark on their own at this point of time."BJP's two allies have become extremely important now - Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, now that BJP might not get its own majority."
Rasheed Kidwai, Visiting Fellow, Observer Research Foundation
"I think there was a lot of economic issues. The BJP has performed badly in rural areas. There was lot of defection and manoeuvring that happened in Maharashtra that boomeranged. Too much reliance on Modi did not work.

"The decline in the seats of the BJP is linked to three states, which are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. In UP particularly the construction and inauguration of the Ram temple did not become a big issue. The social coalition made by Samajwadi Party and Congress seems to have made the difference as it was formidable."
Surendra Kumar Dwivedi, Political Analyst
"The trend very clearly shows that in a state like Uttar Pradesh, which has Ram Temple, the temple is not the only deciding factor anymore and developmental issues especially, which are related to youths like rampant leaks of the competitive examination (services) and unemployment, had made an impact on the youths who were the largest chunk of voters."

'Baahubali,' that was what Chief Minister M K Stalin said to describe the turnout for the Coimbatore rally addressed by him and Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi in April and said the "total BJP was trumped," by that single public meeting.
With the DMK and allies far ahead in all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state and 1 in neighbouring Puducherry, it appears the outcome, for the Stalin-led Dravidian party will be similar to the success of the popular flick Baahubali.
The streak of electoral success for Stalin steered alliance began in the 2019 LS polls and since then, be it civic polls or the 2021 Assembly elections, it has been a sweet win for the DMK, Congress and other allies including the Left parties. - PTI
