Prominent Muslim groups call for revocation of CAA

Prominent Muslim organisations on Friday demanded the revocation of the CAA, a judicial inquiry into the violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University and compensation for those killed and injured in "police firing" during protests against the controversial citizenship law.

The organizations, after a meeting, also expressed concern over the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Registration (NPR), asserting that either NPR should either be withdrawn or its additional clauses removed.

NIA court remands Akhil Gogoi to judicial custody again

A special NIA court on Friday remanded RTI activist and peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, arrested under the stringent UAPA following his participation in protests against the amended Citizenship Act last month, to 14 days of judicial custody once again.

Gogoi, the chief adviser of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), had been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody on December 26 by the NIA court. "The judge has sent him to 14 days of judicial custody again," Gogoi's advocate Santanu Borthakurtold PTI.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday accused AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal of not taking a "strong" stand against the amended Citizenship Act, saying the Delhi chief minister wanted both supporters and opponents of the law on his side.

CAA to hit poor the hardest: TMC leader Derek O' Brien

Alleging that the decisions of the BJP-led government at the Centre have largely been discriminatory, TMC MP Derek O' Brien on Friday said the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), much like demonetisation, would hurt the poor most.

O'Brien, while participating in a discussion on the CAA at a premier law school in the city, said the country was facing a "serious crisis" due to the Centre's decision to implement the new citizenship law.

"Demonetisation (in 2016) had hit the poor hard. The impact remains the same (with regard to CAA, NRC). This time, too, the Centre's decision will affect housewives, students, bankers, farmers -- in short everybody. It will hit the poorest of the poor the hardest," the senior TMC leader claimed.

Shah leads BJP's CAA outreach, says oppn is misleading

Home Minister and BJP President Amit Shah on Sunday led the party's massive outreach efforts to “bust myths” about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), starting his campaign from South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar and Amar Colony areas which is home to refugees of the Partition as well as persecuted Sikhs from Afghanistan.

Union Ministers and BJP leaders fanned across 42 cities to counter the opposition onslaught against the CAA, visiting households, interacting with the residents, handing out pamphlets to clarify doubts about the law speeding up grant of citizenship to persecuted minorities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Shah toured Lajpat Nagar area visiting people living in thatched huts as well as tony flats distributing pamphlets and interacting with them for about 45-minutes on Sunday evening. Three men from Uttar Pradesh admitted to hospitals in Delhi with suspected gunshot injuries when protests over the new citizenship law had hit the state died during treatment, doctors said on Thursday.

Mohammed Shafeeq, aged about 40, and Mukeem, 20, were shifted to Safdarjung Hospital from a hospital in Firozabad on December 24 and 22, respectively, while Mohammed Haroon, 30, was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre on Wednesday.

"Haroon had suffered bullet injury on the neck and was shifted from a hospital in Firozabad. He died during the course of treatment early Thursday," a doctor at AIIMS Trauma Centre told PTI.

Protests have commenced on the premises of Rangacharlu Town Hall in Mysuru

Over a couple of thousand people have already gathered at the Town Hall, while people are still arriving from all parts of the city. Agitators holding national flags and black bands on their arms were encouraged to shout slogans like 'Inquilab Zindabad', 'CAA Murdabad' and 'NRC Murdabad'.

There were appeals to cooperate with the police and to be courteous to the people amd not to cover the faces. Ulemas said, until the CAA is withdrawn, the protests would continue. Most of the speech was in Urdu.

Mangaluru violence was pre-planned, organized: Bommai

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said the violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the communally-sensitive Mangaluru was “pre-planned” and that people from neighbouring Kerala were also involved.

Bommai’s comments came hours after the Mangaluru police, which is facing inquiry after it opened fire killing two people last week, released videos of rioting in the port city.

“There are visuals on how stones were pelted in a big way, how people covered their faces and sabotaged CCTV cameras, how there was an organized looting, how bricks meant for construction were used, how petrol bombs were also used...everyone has seen the videos,” Bommai said. “Can anyone call them innocents? It was an organized plan to create violence.”
